Shanghai Shenhua, one of China's most successful football clubs, has lost its long-time coach and mentor, Wu Jingui. The club released a statement on Monday, mourning the loss of the former head coach.
Wu Jingui had been with Shanghai Shenhua for over two decades, starting as a player before becoming a coach in 1996. He was known for his tactical acumen and ability to develop young talent, and his influence on the club was felt throughout his time there.
In recent years, Wu Jingui faced criticism from some fans and players who accused him of not being tough enough on disciplinary issues. However, he remained committed to his job and continued to work hard to improve the team's performance.
The club's chairman, Li Weifeng, said in the statement: "We are deeply saddened by the news of Wu Jingui's passing. His contributions to Shanghai Shenhua have been immeasurable, and we will always remember him as a great coach and mentor."
Wu Jingui is survived by his wife and three children. The club has organized a memorial service for him and will continue to honor his memory through various activities.
